Warning labels that obscure half the packaging on tinned tobacco products is absolute overkill. Cigarette packs had the warning on the side of the package - but for pipe smokers these warning are right on the front and screaming out their warning. Why not print a warning on Twinkies that covers half the front packaging which reads "Eating Twinkies Will Give You A Fat Ass And Clog You Arteries". Or next time you go to the grocery store and buy a package of fresh fish have a warning which reads "Contains Mercury Which Is Known To Cause Brain Damage" plastered across the front. Or how about a warning printed across the bottom half of the screen on your next smart phone that reads "Don't Text And Drive". The only sign required is near the cash register at the stores selling tobacco products which plainly states: "No Tobacco Sales To Minors" - and leave my tin art alone.

@ghostsofpompeii, couldn't agree more! The whole labeling and packaging rules are wrong. Even the food facts are stupid. You have our government to thank for this in all their efficiency, knowledge, wisdom and ability to make sure we are safe and healthy in everything we buy.

This has nothing to do with our government. Those are EU-mandated labels. Look on tins from American companies, and you won't see that.
I just got half-a-dozen tins of Dunhill Ye Olde Sign, and there were no labels.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve had all of my tobacco shipped to me in Connecticut from P&C in Pennsylvania. I’ve never seen any labels like the ones shown above. I’m wondering just who is doing this and at what point in the process such labeling occurs. Besides, I thought smoking was only harmful to people who live in California.

@judandhispipe is correct, those are European labels and not meant for the U.S. market.

@judandhispipe and @ Charles That's a relief. I guess that means pipe tobacco only kills Europeans. @Topaz75 That's pretty funny. It seems everything manufactures has been known to cause cancer in California. I even put together a stationary bike that had that warning on the first page of the instruction manual.

It's not about tobacco being dangerous but rather government interference and control of our choices. Same issues occurred in the 1930s Germany under Hitler.

According to this article, new larger warning labels will be required on cigar boxes starting in 2018. The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which granted the FDA the right to control all tobacco products, will therefore require similar warnings on pipe tobacco packaging as well. I've read that legislation preventing the FDA from regulating cigars the way they do cigarettes passed in the House in September but I can't find anything regarding the status of that bill which needs to be approved by the Senate in order to become law. I believe that legislation would also apply to pipe tobacco.
