I have a nice one that I found in an antique shop in Manteo, North Carolina. It's a Kaywoodie stainless with a tamper on one end, and a swing open pick and two inch blade. Made in the USA.
I've got one I bought last year, from Paul's up in Flint. I had one years ago, and lost it. I don't use the blade much - I read someplace that is intended for cutting rope or plug, and is too sharp for reaming. I also use pipe nails and Czech tools - all depending on where I am and what I need to do.
I have seen recently the additions to smokingpipes.com website where they have some new Joseph Rodgers pipe knives. They are interesting I have been thinking of them myself and possibly getting one. Currently I do not have a pipe knife I just use my Brigham tamper, and a reaming tool when needed. @topaz75 your Kaywoodie pipe knife sounds pretty cool and classic, @judandhispipe I have been to Paul's a couple of times but I must have overlooked the pipe knifes I never saw them. There are so many pipes in that store it is like a mini pipe show I am sure I have overlooked many items.
@piperdave,the thing to do when you are at Paul's,and you don't see something - ask! They have more stuff than they have display space. The pipe knives were in a drawer behind the counter.
@piperdave I own one of the basic Joseph Rodgers tools and it's amazing! I tried one of the 8deco ones before it and couldn't get a good tamp due to the conical shape of the tamper. The Rodgers tool is absolutely worth the extra $15 over a Czech tool in my book.
Posted this in the Daily Briar Shoot thread, but thought I'd post this here as well. The pocket knife pictured belonged to my late grandfather, who was not a smoker. I keep the knife with my tobacco and use it to cut plugs for my pipe. I have so many memories of my grandfather, but not many of his personal belongings, so I treasure it.
@Dabears Thanks for the info, I will keep the Joseph Rodgers tool in mind. Kind of funny but lately I have been using my Missouri Meerschaum golf tee tamper more lately (I think cause its readily available) than anything else.
