and the bit is newer than the bowl. But it has a small delron tube tenon smokes wonderfully. The other is around one hundred
years old is in original condition,no cracks or repairs, original bit.But it has a stinger and the manner that the draft hole was
drilled is hard to pass a cleaner thru. The second one while being a really nice pi[pe is a poor smoker so only gets pulled
down maybe once a year.I use my meer when I'm smoking an english blend, the flavors come thru so much more and
have made a bleh smoke into a nirvanna zen expierience.
This the older of the two.
Traditional methods for encouraging patina on meerschaum pipes:
• Regular smoking: Frequent use builds patina steadily through smoke absorption.
• Rest cycles: Allowing the pipe to cool and dry between smokes reduces risk of cracking and promotes even absorption.
• Rotation: Using several pipes in alternation prevents overheating and extends lifespan.
• Gentle handling: Oils from the hand help surface coloration, so many smoke bare-handed rather than with gloves.
• Waxing: Periodic beeswax treatment (applied warm, not hot) nourishes the surface and deepens color as absorbed compounds migrate outward.
• Avoid overheating: Patina develops best with cool, consistent smoking rather than forcing the process with excess heat.
Collectors value even, gradual coloration over rapid, patchy darkening.
I smoke them while handling them as any other pipe, with clean hands/fingers. I do, carefully, run a paper towel in the bowls after each smoke, and occasionally wax the exteriors with white beeswax.
Sounds as if we went to the same meerschaum school.
I too need to smoke my meers more often, and use a paper towel in the bowl after each use.
I'm hoping these Meerschaum Mondays will cause me to at least consider my meers more often.
Time will tell...
You may be right about “meer school” 🙂
I too am of the opinion that a couple of back to back bowls in a meer, keeping it warm and open pored, should speed the coloring along as well.
Smoke a meer like normal, not huffing away until the meer is too hot to handle, and everything will be ok.
